BANCO POPULAR DOMINICANO SPONSORS JAZZ CONCERT BY MICHEL CAMILO

 

       New York City. – For the second consecutive year, Banco Popular Dominicano sponsored the stellar event of the Dominican Week in the United States, a celebration that has been carried out for the last twelve years.

      This year’s presentation was a Jazz Concert by 2004 Grammy award winning Dominican musician Michel Camilo who has a professional career that spans over thirty years and which started, at the age of sixteen, with his acceptance as a member of the National Symphonic Orchestra of the Dominican Republic.

     The concert by the renowned pianist and composer took place at the Alice Tully Hall in the Lincoln Center on Wednesday the 29th, at 8:00 p.m., and attracted the attention of a large public which included a great representation of people of Dominican descent.

      Banco Popular Dominicano was named 2004 Bank of the Year of the Dominican Republic by “The Banker” an economic intelligence magazine edited by the Financial Times Group in London.  It was the first privately owned Dominican bank to offer its services to the public.  Today it has over 1.7 million clients (roughly 10% of the total population), owns 187 branches in the country and is the main subsidiary of Grupo Popular, a financial holding group with a large shareholder base, composed of over 5,000 constituents. Grupo Popular comprises distinguished companies such as BPD Bank in the United States, Popular Bank in Panama, and Seguros Popular, AFP Popular and Leasing Popular in the Dominican Republic, among others.

      With this activity, Banco Popular Dominicano and the Organizing Committee of the Dominican Week in the United States give public recognition to the laboriousness of the Dominican population in the United States and look forward projecting a positive outlook of authentic Dominican cultural roots.

      The Dominican Week in the United States, an annual offering that covers several American cities, has fostered the bilateral ties between the United States and the Dominican Republic as well as served as support for the Dominican-American community. This celebration has also raised interest and fostered the attention given to Dominican affairs, as well as stimulated academic and artistic exchanges.  It has become a major liaison for people interested in working with the Dominican-American community.

     Prior to the event, and as the main sponsor of the concert, Banco Popular Dominicano offered a cocktail where important personalities of the political, financial, commercial, educational and cultural communities both from the Dominican Republic and the United States were present.

    Other sponsors of the concert included the Dominican-American Chamber of Commerce of New York, the Dominican Assistance Fund, Verizon, Pepsi and American Airlines, among many.
